Grace's Logbook #2 - Reconstruction Begins

The Grace Rebuilding Series

Reconstruction Begins - Finally

In January of 2025, Grace was taken out of the water at Thunderbolt Marine Inc. (TMI) in Thunderbolt Georgia to begin her reconstruction process. Housed in a giant warehouse structure, a scaffolding was built around Grace for access. While she will undergo many structural repairs and upgrades, the first order of business is to repair the damage to her deck as the superstructure/canopy was torn from its attachments due to Hurricane Helene in September of 2024.

The mahogany toe rail took the brunt of the physical damage of the storm as this was where the canopy was actually attached to the hull. Sections of the toe rail were damaged as the screws pulled free, but much of it remained intact. The shipwrights at TMI got to work by removing the damaged sections, repairing them with new wood. Captain Adam Jay took on the responsibility of refinishing the wood.

Once the toerail repair is complete, the fabrication of the metal canopy structure can begin.
